One of the best VHS F1 season reviews May 1, 2009 midgrid (UK) This video is without doubt my joint personal favourite of the 1981-2002 VHS reviews along with 1989, 1990 and 2002. It is a huge improvement on the poorly-edited 1994 video which preceded it, and much longer and more in-depth than the following 1996 and 1997 videos.
The key to this success is not only the generous three-hour running time, but also the balance and editing of the content. Having watched some full-race coverage on YouTube recently, I can say that the condensed race reports are as fully comprehensive as one could hope, easy to follow (a must when many races were decided by pit-stop strategy), well-narrated by Steve Rider (who fronted BBC Grandstand's coverage of F1 at the time) and another man who I can't identify, and makes good use of camera angles that were not used during live broadcasts of the race. Full race results (the standard FOM results graphic) are also given at the end of each race.
In addition to the race action, there is an in-depth preview to the season, including car launches, interviews with some of the drivers, rule changes and all of the major news stories. In between race reports, there is an ongoing "Schumacher vs. Hill" feature, reflecting upon the battle between the championship protagonists, and several additional video montages which add to the general atmosphere of the video: examples include "overtaking", "wet...", commemorations of Jean Alesi and Johnny Herbert's first F1 victories, and, more bizarrely, a tribute to Taki Inoue!
I have a couple of gripes with the video, but these are only minor. First, footage from practice and qualifying is negligible. Even though these sessions are not worth any points, some coverage would have been interesting. On most occasions the narrator simply gives a run-down of the top four or so positions just before the start of the race, whilst engines are revving in anticipation of the green light! Secondly, the post-race analysis and driver interviews are very much concentrated on Schumacher and Hill. Granted, these two were fighting for the championship, but it would have been nice to hear from other drivers, especially the first-time winners. It's also worth mentioning that much of the backing music used in the features now sounds seriously dated, although this is understandable.
All in all, however, this remains an excellent product, easily one of the best official season reviews produced. Even if you don't like Michael Schumacher all that much, the quality of the video should outweigh that consideration! A good purchase for anyone interested in Formula 1 history, especially the beginner in this field.
Excellent October 19, 2007 Sean M (London, ENG, GBR.) A thoroughly good and long video! This is what F1 season reviews should be like!
This was a fairly dominant season for Schumacher as Damon Hill cracked under the pressure and wasn't helped by his inferior pitcrew. The video demonstrates how Benetton were able to get pitstops and strategies so right compared to Williams, and how that benefited Schumacher over Hill.
This season seen well deserved first victories for David Coulthard, Johnny Herbert and Jean Alesi. Included are some fine career summaries of all three drivers.
Clocking in at nearly three hours, this is how videos should be used.
Video of a great season January 13, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been impressed with this video. It has it all although it would be better with the qualifying but it has the TV banners and after the races you have a few exclusive interviews with Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill and you even catch up with the latest 1995 news after the races although straight after the Argentinian GP there is the sad news about Fangio's death. But it even has the news about when drivers were replaced. A few drivers missed a bit of this exciting season but it was great that there are a few special documentaries. That starts when Jean Alesi took his first and only race win and you can see his career up until 1995 and you can see the same with Johnny Herbert at the British grand prix and David Coulthard at the Portugese grand prix. a race marred by a start line accident when Ukyo Katayama crashed his Tyrrell into a barrier and the Tyrrell was twisting and barrel-rolling before landing upside down on top of a Forti. The driver was badly shaken although unhurt and missed the European Grand Prix before coming back for the race after that. He was lucky to escape that crash unhurt. despite being shaken. But it was Michael Schumacher's turn to win the title again. The driver did get a few chances before his great win in 1994 and a great 1995 win. A must buy for any F1 fan.
Not bad, but not brilliant either! July 4, 2004 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This review spends a reasonable amount of time on each race, but very little time is spent on the qualifying and there is too much in the way of 'filler' that doesen't add to the film greatly. It could have been vastly better, but it could also have been vastly worse.
In depth and engaging January 29, 2004 S. Smith (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The 1995 FIA review is a very well put together video. Comprising of a lovely 3 hours worth of material, each race is covered in sufficient detail with most of the big events all being covered. Inbetween each race is a nice little snippet of Schumacher Vs. Hill, and there are a few little documentary's on Herbert, Alesi, Inoue (helerious may I add) and Katayama. It's good to see most of the feild gets a small piece of the video, although instead of showing battles down the order, the video over does the pitstops. While pitstops for fuel was still a relatively new thing in F1 then, I'd have rather seen on track action than cars getting their wheels changed every 30 seconds!Apart from that little annoyance, this is a high quality video
