Amazon.co.uk Review A cultish horror favourite, 1962's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? will make you think twice before hungrily unveiling a covered plate of food. Bette Davis stars as Jane Hudson, a onetime child actress and singer. As an elderly woman, she wishes to revive her vaudevillian career, but she has become a grotesque caricature of her former self. Over the years as her star faded, the star of her older sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) rose, outshining the career of the has-been Baby Jane. Jane was relegated to minor roles, which she only won when Blanche demanded that she be awarded them. The film opens years after a calamitous car accident leaves Blanche in a wheelchair, with no one to care for her except the increasingly insane and sadistic Jane and their servant, Norman. Trying to punish Blanche for her years of success, Jane tortures the house-bound woman, slowly trying to starve her to death, all the while attempting to recapture the fame of her youth. This dark drama also stars Victor Buono as the hefty pianist who answers Jane's ad for an accompanist, hoping to milk some money off the demented old woman. Both Buono and Davis were nominated for Oscars for their roles in this suspenseful and somewhat sick thriller that exploited well the real-life antagonism between Davis and Crawford, while at the same time rejuvenating both their careers. --Jenny Brown

I'll tell you what happened to Baby Jane...she got old! July 1, 2010 S. J. Pinkus I note that there are already many reviews of this movie, and so I shall try to keep this one relatively short and sweet. Or should I say short and sour? Since What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? is so well known, I am not going to go over the entire plot, or set out its production history. Instead, I am just going to draw the reader's attention to one aspect of what I call "the downstairs story". Baby Jane (Bette Davis) is a former child star who once outshone all of the other children, including her sister, Blanche (Joan Crawford). Unfortunately for Jane, and this is a problem experienced by many child stars no doubt, over time Jane's looks began to fade, her voice to crack, and her fame to dwindle. After years of obscurity and heavy drinking, Jane decides that the time has finally come to revive her old act. Dressed up like a very frightening porcelain doll, complete with dangling locks and dancing shoes, Jane rehearses in the living room while her newly-appointed pianist bemusedly observes the spectacle. Spinning and twirling across the room, Jane sings the lyrics, "I've written a letter to daddy", with a twinkle in her eye and a wrinkle (or two) beneath. This scene is perhaps the most iconic of the film's many wonderful scenes, and certainly one of my favourites. It beautifully blends the comic and the tragic, and sums up Jane's character all at once - delusional, sentimental, and desperate. Every time I watch it I get shivers, which is quite remarkable given how many years ago the film was made. In summary, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? is essential viewing for all movie lovers, and is almost guaranteed to leave you wanting more...
Old films June 11, 2010 Peter Hesketh I first saw film more than 40 years ago when I was in Samoa and have watched it whenever the opportunity arose. I can now watch it whenever I please.
Fantastic! April 29, 2010 J. E. Milner (Republic of Ireland) A fantastic film, well acted by both leading women, and keeps your attention. Bette Davis is amazing as the sad and disturbed Jane Hudson. The extra disc is worth a look and provides an insight into both women's characters. Bette Davis comes across as the more genuine of the two women; there was something shifty about Joan Crawford!
Davis at her evil best March 3, 2010 Mr. A. Tait (Scotland) This is a 'must watch' film from the 50s. Bette Davis is truly amazing. Drunk, swaggering, cruel, twisted and utterly believable. The whole film is edge-of-the-seat stuff, and the psychology beats Misery and Psycho to the post as it isn't overplayed. It's just there. Brilliant! 6 stars if they'd let me.
Still love this film! January 23, 2010 Mrs. D. A. Wylie I hadn't seen this film for about ten years...watching it brought back the same intense and harrowing feelings that I experienced as a teenager. Yes it compelling and so intense!!!
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, make this film one of the all time greats! the acting is so amazing you just feel all there emotions and become so involved in the characters... a movie not to be missed!
They just don't make them like this anymore a classic!
