Amazon.co.uk Review
Three generations of rock guitarists come together for It Might Get Loud, a 2009 documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth). These are not just your garden-variety guitar gods: Jimmy Page, in his mid-'60s at the time of the film, founded Led Zeppelin, who dominated the 1970s following the breakup of the Beatles. As a member of U2, 48-year-old David Evans, better known as the Edge, created one of the most distinctive and influential sounds of the past quarter century. And 34-year-old Jack White (of the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather) was described by one music publication as "the most significant rock 'n' roll figure of the past ten years." Guggenheim, who followed the three around for the better part of a year, takes us into their individual lives, past and present. There are shots of Page as a young London session musician, with the Yardbirds and Zeppelin, at Headley Grange (the estate where much of the fourth Zep album was made), and at home with his record collection. The Edge takes us to the Dublin classroom where U2 first rehearsed, as well as to the practice room he uses now (never a virtuoso soloist, he developed a style based on texture and a mind-boggling array of effects); and White, whose insistence on authenticity is admirable but perhaps a tad self-conscious, constructs a "guitar" from a plank of wood, a piece of wire, and a Coke bottle (he also plays a recording by the primitive bluesman Son House, featuring just voice and handclaps, that White says is still his biggest inspiration). The three also converge on a Hollywood sound stage, where they chat and a do a little jamming on Zep's "In My Time of Dying" (with all three playing slide guitar) and the Band's "The Weight." It's hard to say if the film's appeal will extend beyond guitar freaks and fans of these particular bands, but at the very least, It Might Get Loud offers some interesting insight into the soul and inspiration behind some of pop's best and most popular music. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars 3 guitarists from 3 generations - but only 2 'real' guitar heroes   July 5, 2010
J. Tyler (Ely, UK)
I would recommend this movie to any guitar player, or guitar enthusiast or music-head: i.e, it might be a little too contrived / documentary for anyone else (but, then, why would someone without an interest in guitars be looking anyway?)

The movie is structured as a documentary / biography of the artists - leading up to a jam session between Page, White and The Edge.

Whilst the (aging) Edge and (aged) Page provide some delicious insights into their creative backgrounds, influences and techniques, it is clear that Jack White gave the editor/producer far too little to work with. Much of the camera time given over to White alone varies between obscure and rubbishy; with certain chapters worth skipping when you watch for a second time.

On a positive note, White's input does illustrate that innovation around the deepest blues is possible with the simplest of techniques - so maybe you, too, could become famous one day...

Look out for the deleted scenes - some great stuff here. In particular, the Seven Nation Army 'jam' session looks like it was deleted for Jimmy Page's face - he looks utterly underwhelmed by this riff!

4 out of 5 stars Guitarists heaven   July 3, 2010

Does what it says on the tin! Three axe masters chewing the cud with the 'other two' pretty much noddig to the fact that Jimmy should take the Riff - Maestro Trophy home. A real treat for those who care where their guitar hero's come from.

5 out of 5 stars It get's loud...   July 2, 2010

Very nice !

Although none of the three guitarists in this documentation is among my favourites ( that would be Stevie Vai, Gary Moore, David Gilmore, Ed van Halen ), it is a very impressive view on the life and art of some interesting artists.

I could learn a lot, how their style has developed during their career. And what drove them to do exactly what they did. I enjoyed this a lot. It's very intimate.

There's the young and radical Jack White. His style is very noisy. It's like he tries to get back to the very roots of rock music to discover what's it all about. Fascinating.

Or The Edge, who's dedicated to guitar effects. He's always looking for that perfect sound matching with the music that's in his mind.

Finally there's Jimmy Page, the legend from Led Zeppelin. The young guys were smiling a lot when he was starting one of his famous songs. He seems to me so elegant, that's my impression.

You can watch them enjoying this meeting so much. It's fun. It makes you smile, too.

So there are loud moments in this movie and quiete ones.

Besides that, the sound quality is very good. The picture of course is another story. There are lots of very old TV scenes, which can hardly be called even SD. On the other hand there are the studio recordings from the meeting, which are of good quality.

All in all, i can recommend this Blu ray to all who are interested in rock music and how some important artists found their sound.

4 out of 5 stars Rockumentary   June 27, 2010

A must for any serious guitar player, or musical historian. It might get loud, is an interesting insight into three well known guitar players. It looks at their inspirations, their own unique biographies, their abilities and their place among music. And also how they have changed it to suit their own unique individual styles.

Marred only by the fact that the director sought to leave out interesting scenes, which although included on the disk, would have made this more (if that's possible), appealing to the true guitarist. It was perhaps to make this more appealing to the general public.

4 Stars simple because the director left the scenes as extras rather than include them in the documentary itself!

Awesome!.
