Excellent film July 28, 2010 An American in Florence (Italy) Cinematography is absolutely superb! For example, when Eva has gone to the teacher to say she was dismissed, the director has shot the film from the teacher's perspective (he is down on the floor looking up at her) and it is amazing to see the tear flow down her cheek. The scenes of the Baron's dining room made me think back some 40 years to the interior of my grandmother's home that was built in the nineteenth century. There are so many other excellent scenes, captured with a very accurate eye for what the audience is to see as the final product.
Various issues remain unresolved at the end of the film, leaving the audience to ponder about what actually happened. It's mysterious and thought-provoking.
A complete waste of over two hours July 19, 2010 Rebecca C (UK) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I cannot believe this film has had so many awards and acclamations. I don't normally write reviews but this has to be one of the worst films that I have ever seen. Extremely dull, it is sinister and there is overtly gratuitous cruelty (torture of a Downs' syndrome boy, someone being extremely verbally cruel to a lover for no apparent reason, a child killing a pet bird with a pair of scissors, scenes that portray child abuse). A series of events happen which are narrated by the local school teacher - these are never solved - there is a suggestion of who the culprit may have been but nothing further. The film left me feeling extremely bored, a bit sick from the gratuitous cruelty but generally just annoyed that you never solidly find out who was behind the events and that the film has no ending. I would thoroughly recommend giving this a big miss!
An Instant Classic! July 6, 2010 Martin A Hogan (San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)) Writer and directed by Michael Haneke ('Funny Games', `The Piano Teacher'), `The White Ribbon' takes place in a small northern Germany village in the year before Austria-Hungary declare war on Serbia provoking World War I. Haneke's direction is magically bleak, shot in a rich black and white with an eerie and powerful feel. (Christian Berger is the cinematographer).
Narrated by the schoolteacher (as an older man recalling the story as in a fable) the film begins with an innocent look at the village people and its structure, notably the feared Baron who provides most of the work for the villagers, the omnipotent town doctor and the self-righteous town's pastor. All three come to represent a respected but feared presence from all, especially the children. A series of cruel and horrifically mean-spirited offenses occur over the year, beginning with the doctor and his horse as they catch a hidden wire while riding and are thrown to the ground. Speculation rises as the villagers try to unearth the culprit. More unthinkable and strange happenings occur, some involving children, sending the village into a sinister atmosphere of distrust and accusation. The pastor tries to remedy his children's behavior by forcing them to wear white ribbons on their arms - a false sign of purity and innocence. At the same time, the pastor is relentless in caning his children behind closed doors. That's one of the marvels of the film, in that, other than the initial horse tragedy, none of the atrocities are directly shown on screen. Both adults and children fall prey to some of these cruel and horrific events. Allegedly, adults towards children and children towards adults.
The cinematography is remarkable as high contrast gives the film a ghostly, foreboding feel and look. Haneke never comes straight forward with answers, but insinuates most of the events, giving the story an almost Hitchcockian feel. Shocking without being graphic, `The White Ribbon' shows the ugly underbelly of a small town that tries to keep its appearances while deteriorating inside. It feels like a true classic.
Far from mediocre, but... July 4, 2010 T. Nield 3 not because it's mediocre - far from it. Much of it was superb and memorable, but my overall feeling was of having been deeply disturbed in an almost gratuitous way. The loose ends and general structure did not lead naturally to any conclusions and so I learned nothing from it; neither did I feel there was, really, anything to be learned.
The banality of evil, revisited June 15, 2010 Mary Sharratt (Lancashire, UK) Set in a stern, almost feudal village in Northern Germany just before the outbreak of the First World War, this thought-provoking film concerns a Serious of Unfortunate Events dished out by a gang of creepy but outwardly obedient children, including the offspring of the Lutheran pastor.
It's hard to say which is more horrible--the terrible deeds committed by the children that the village cannot, or will not, face, or the horrible things done to the children by their parents. Imagine a German art house Village of the Damned. It seems that no child in the village is undisturbed.
In the chilling climactic scene, after the school master presents his "evidence" of the children's crimes to the pastor who immediately dismisses and represses this information, we see the children in the church choir loft, their angelic voices raised to sing the iconic Lutheran hymn, "Ein Fester Burg is unser Gott" (A Mighty Fortress is Our God) as the news of the war descends.
This is not a fast-paced who-dunnit, but a period piece, its slow story-telling set to match the rhythms of village life. It presents difficult questions about the nature of evil and the roots of Germany's fascism while leaving the viewer to find their own answers.
