Up in the Air transforms some painful subjects into smart, sly comedy--with just enough of the pain underneath to give it some weight. Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) spends most of his days traveling around the country and firing people; he's hired by bosses who don't have the nerve to do their layoffs themselves. His life of constant flight suits him--he wants no attachments. But two things suddenly threaten his vacuum-sealed world: his company decides to do layoffs via video conference so they don't have to pay for travel, and Bingham meets a woman named Alex (Vera Farmiga, The Departed), who seems to be the female version of him⦠and of course, he starts to fall in love. Writer-director Jason Reitman is building a career from funny but thoughtful movies about compromised people--a pregnant teen in Juno, a cigarette-company executive in Thank You for Smoking. George Clooney has a gift for playing smart men who aren't quite as smart as they think they are (Michael Clayton, Out of Sight). The combination is perfect: Bingham is charming and sympathetic but clearly missing something, and Up in the Air captures that absence with clarity and compassion. The outstanding supporting cast includes Anna Kendrick (Rocket Science), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Danny McBride (Pineapple Express), Melanie Lynskey (Away We Go), and others, each small part pitched exactly right.--Bret Fetzer

The film should have been a runaway success. A HR executive flies around the country working for a consultancy that specialises in 'firing people' for blue chip clients. Clooney carries the film as he always does with a smooth airy 'couldn't care less' attitude one would expect from a high flyer in such a role. The signs early on are good. I particularly enjoyed the 'talking head style' inserts of actual people (probably extras-they lacked Hollywood teeth and bone structure) who speak from the heart about the effects of recent unemployment. I had at least three big belly laughs at this point as the afflicted rant, wreck rooms and tell Clooney where to stick it. But as the film moves into a furtive mile-high-club style affair and at times an almost Kafka like look at the futility of life I was left pondering on what might have been. It satisfies neither romantic comedy, rip roaring road movie nor deep philosophical study on the reality of the credit crunch. In summary this film is like a sugar free de-caff latte'. It should have been great, Clooney is good but only a watch once and forget tag I'm afraid.

If you like intelligent thought provoking films then this should be added to your list of ones to watch. The first person narrative style which was used so effectively in Jason Reitman's other excellent film about corporate life (Thank you for Smoking) is in evidence again and it works so well. Well observed and with lead characters that are spot on, you are immediately involved and kept engaged with the film throughout. Highly recommended particularly if you have any experience of corporate life.

In what I thought was one of the best films of 2009, George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizer who travels the country firing employees whose bosses are too cowardly to terminate in person. He has a sideline as a motivational speaker, extolling the virtues of a lifestyle free of relationship or dependency, but his real interest is the accumulation of frequent flyer miles (one of the delights of the story is the contrast between his fierce adherence to the airline's loyalty scheme and the way in which he's rewarding the loyalty of the people he's seeing every day).
The part is written so well, and Clooney is such a good actor, that you start out feeling that Bingham's life is one worthy of emulation (there's a classic early scene - set to a soundtrack item called "Security Ballet" - in which he manages to make the debilitating and degrading process of going through airport security appear cool, poised and sexy). Having drawn you in to the story so completely, you're then reminded of the flaws in his choices through his encounters with the youthful, optimistic Natalie, the bold, mysterious Alex and his semi-estranged family. Ryan's not a bad man, just a mistaken one - and the way in which we stay with him as his initial dedication to an attachment-free life is shaken is proof of Clooney's sympathetic portrayal of this unpromising character. This is a great film: funny, engaging and subtly beguiling, centred on a terrifically stylish performance by Clooney and able support from Vera Farmiga's Alex and Anna Kendrick's Natalie.

In a world where unemployment rates are hitting the highest peak, it's nice to find a movie that actually shows how different types of people handle that moment when they realize that they've lost their job! The movie touches upon a lot of aspects, which I think many people can relate to. George Clooney's job in the movie requires him to travel around the USA just to fire employees. He is seldom, actually almost never, home. His life revolves around planes, restaurants and just his job, in general. In the course of the movie, we find him going from a workaholic business traveller to the sudden realization that all the perks he's getting from his life actually don't mean that much... In the end, having someone with you in life, either a friend, girlfriend or family, is really what matters more... ;-)

A really enjoyable film with George Clooney perfectly cast as the much-travelled business executive. An accurate reflection of the 'highs and lows' of corporate life in the twenty-first century. Well-acted and beautifully photographed, the film deserved its Oscar nomination.
