Jodi Picoult should be arrested for crimes against humanity. July 14, 2010 J. Murphy 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Even though he was referring to a different film, I feel it appropriate to quote the comedian Will Selfe at this point: "It was the most sick and twisted manipulation of a cinema audiences feelings since Triumph of the Will".
The premise is interesting. But rather than any genuine courtroom or medical drama, we get given an eternal series of montages, soley designed to make the audience feel as sad as possible, all the while being increasingly pretentious and self indulgent. Not only is this cheap, its downright insulting. The film making is mediocre and the script is appaling, cliched and predictable.
And this is my problem with all of Jodi Picoult's novels, and therefore their film adaptations: They present the reader/viewer with an unlikely, medical related sob-fest in a vague attempt to make them feel like they are witnessing something 'intelligent'.
Please, please, do not waste your time on this film, as it is nowhere near as clever as it likes to think it is.
Heartbreaking June 28, 2010 debbie This DVD is amazing. i couldnt believe how heartbreaking it was to watch this, i cant count how many times i cried during it. its a happy and heartbreaking story. makes you think what would i do in this situation.
just another pointless tearjerker June 27, 2010 Stefanie (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was impressed with Cameron Diaz's acting skills, this is the deepest and most challenging role I have seen her in and she really pulled it out of the bag, in fact all of the cast did, especially Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva
I've heard comments from many about how amazing and sad this film is, and yes, it did have me crying at many points, but the ending was completely different to the book and therefore completely changed the film's meaning! When asked by her son why the book had to end the way it did, Jodi Piccoult said because 'it was the only way to hammer home to all the characters what's truly important in life'. Without this ending, the film is just a depressing (and rather uncomfortable in places) story about a girl with cancer. Even the title 'My Sister's Keeper' loses its meaning. I understand many people would be uncomfortable watching the original ending, but at least it is true and meaningful.
The film takes a heart breaking issue and makes it melodramatic and schmaltzy, with lines such as 'if you're ever lost, go to Montana...that's where i'll be.'
I mean please.
Oh Dear June 13, 2010 Mrs. F. Mulligan (UK) Oh Dear, What a mess this is.
I loved the casting and esp Alec Baldwin, Abigail Breslin and Cameron Diaz.
The book is so incredibly powerful BECAUSE of the ending... WHY oh WHY did they not follow the great beginning of the film with the correct ending!!!!
Very Sad to see, such a good book vandalised like this,
