Lovely July 25, 2010 chillinb (UK/IT) I agree with Andy Millward and Movie Buff. This is a beautifully shot film, with a gentle storyline.
I had actually expected less time being spent on Coco's personal life and more film time being spent on fashion and clothing. Then I re-thought the title and realised that the film focussed on her life before her fame. However, I still think that there could have been more attention to her inspirations and creativity.
Audrey Tatou is not my favourite actress and she played the part without displaying overt emotion. However, I have no idea whether "Coco" was emotionally demonstrative and, with particular regard to the era, she may well have been very reserved. Despite this, I enjoyed her performance and I loved the film as a whole. The whole feel of the film to me was quite British and I love British films.
As for those people complaining about sub-titles - get a grip. It's a French film!
Beautiful work of art and very inspirational July 15, 2010 yooneui I was mesmerised by the captivating story of the brave and strong young individual Chanel was as well as the beautiful cinematography in every scene. There are some wonderful characters, and the storyline is so different and refreshing. This film didn't seem to be so much about fashion as to a celebration of the life of Gabrielle Chanel before her fame. It left me feeling empowered and wanting to learn some French!!
Spin & nonsense June 22, 2010 Squeaker (London, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If the directors had included Coco's involvement with Nazis & her use of Aryan laws to try to get control of a Jewish perfumery business, the film would have been much more complex & interesting. There are some things not even fabulous outfits redeem.
But it seems they just wanted to create a frou-frou hagiography of a much-loved French figure. Shallow? Moi non plus...
Style over substance June 16, 2010 Andy Millward (Broxbourne, Herts, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Speaking as a keen devotee both of French films and films without an extensive narrative to drive a plot (and trust me, I've seen plenty of those in my time!), you would expect me to enjoy Coco Before Chanel. In fact, I found the film somewhat shapeless and undramatic. Ravishing to look at, beautifully acted and correct in almost every detail, but with insufficient substance to fill the 2 hours allotted. I kept wanting something different to happen, but it never did.
The title is the giveaway: Coco before Chanel, indeed. Coco after Chanel is glossed over in the text epilogue displayed after the film has ended. Are we to assume Coco's life during these years of huge success so undramatic they did not warrant any screen time? Why not Coco Chanel's full life story? Compared to the La Vie En Rose, the entire film fails to deliver the goods, but I can't believe that is simply because less happened to Chanel than to Piaf.
Admittedly, the subject and her relative lack of emotional intensity does not help, portrayed with accuracy but no real charm by the excellent Tautou. A car crash betrays the only real feeling in the film. Seldom do we get inside the character to learn her inner drive. Surely there must have been more layers of the Chanel onion to peel? At any rate, the character and the film appear distant and uninvolving, which is a great shame.

This is a story about Coco and not a fashion documentary. I enjoyed it, but it was in French which can be hard work reading subtitles. If your looking for a good this, this is nice, but don't look for fashion here.
