Amazon.co.uk Review Even those who previously were alien to the charms of Torchwood, the âadult’ Doctor Who spin off, were left applauding by the end of 2009’s five-episode serial, Torchwood: Children Of Earth. For this was âadult’ in a good sense: no cheap swearing, no sex and violence for the sake of it. Rather, a challenging, thumping good tale for grown-ups, superbly told. Its story, as so many Torchwood stories do, has alien intruders at its heart. Far more creepily, though, there’s the small matter of all the children on the planet being controlled at once. It’s thrillingly realised, and genuinely gets under your skin. The drama is further complicated by the dishevelled state that Torchwood itself is in when we find it, as it’s once more tasked with saving the world from disaster. Rarely has it been so ill-prepared for such a major threat. To tell you more about the plot of Torchwood: Children Of Earth would be to spoil it. It’s a dish very much best served cold, and an outstanding piece of science fiction television. It also looks its best in high definition, courtesy of a quality Blu-ray release. We’re not talking Hollywood blockbuster feature film standards, but it’s not too far behind. And it’s as good a looking a piece of British sci-fi as you can find on Blu-ray to date. Simply: an outstanding serial, and a very good disc. --Jon Foster

As any grown up doctor who show should be. September 2, 2010 Joel Clark I disagree with people saying that this it overrated.
Because it is rated as it should be.
5 episodes An hour each and a gripping drama sci fi.
What more could you ask for.
Enjoyed every minute of it.
Amazing! August 28, 2010 rachel I am a fan of the first two Torchwood series, but when watching them I always felt that they were lacking something slightly, but this feeling is lost quickly in the 3rd series. Brilliantly crafted and well written this drama pulls you in and really affects you, I gon't want to give anything away but at several points in Episode 4 and 5 I was in floods. When it was first broadcast people were worried that the 5-part drama would not work as well as a full series, but luckily they were proved wrong and it really works. I would definitely recommend this to any fans of Torchwood or sci-fi but would warn you that if you are used to the upbeat, happy-go-lucky tone of Doctor Who you are in for a shock, as this has a much darker tone, but is still worth a watch and I would say that it is the best Torchwood series but I think it also would appeal to people who are not as clued up on the "who-verse" as me.
Happy US PS3 Viewer August 11, 2010 Jeffrey J. Peterson (apo, ae United States) The video quality is great. All the hype about 1080i50hz turned out to be a good overkill. I have no problem with play back on my US PS3 slim 120Gb.
About the show. What can I say, Brilliant !!
Torchwood - Children of Earth August 10, 2010 David Law Season 3 or the mini series saw the Torchwood team up against shadowy goernment forces and a potentially nasty alien. To be honest it was typical Russell T Davies in that it offered much but ultimately fell short of the high standards it aimed for. The plot line was confusing and you needed to be a dedicated fan to understand some of the devices that Davies used. The ending was a let down and although this won plaudits and a new series has been commissioned it needs to improve.
As Good As TV Science Fiction Gets August 7, 2010 Andrew Morton (Lockerbie Scotland) This is the kind of production that divides people. There are those for whom Science Fiction is escapist entertainment, and there are those for whom Science Fiction is an opportunity to tell stories that delve into the darker aspects of humanity. Through Seasons 1 & 2 Torchwood veered, sometimes haphazardly, between the two, but tended toward escapism. Here it gets dark. Very dark. If you don't like dark, don't buy this DVD. But if your tastes tend toward proper adult drama - and I'm thinking Ibsen and Miller here without being pretentious - then this is for you.
It's hard to write a review of this DVD without giving away the plot. Suffice to say that it revolves around a moral dilemma - and a biggie. Suffice to say that every time you think you've got the measure of this moral dilemma the story ups the ante. Suffice to say that even though I've seen it before, and knew all the twists and turns, there are times that it still moves me to tears. This is drama in the proper old-fashioned sense of the word.
All of this is backed up by a cast that acts its socks off. Special plaudits have to go to Peter Capaldi who gives a masterclass in acting as Frobisher. Eve Mylles is also on top form, but so too are Susan Brown, Gareth David Lloyd and Paul Copley. John Barrowman has his limits as an actor, but he substantially overcomes them here. The direction is pitch-perfect and the pacing is like a Swiss watch.
There's not much CGI in this story, few special effects. This is story-telling pure and simple. I urge you to buy it, or borrow it, or sit with someone else while they watch it. Just do yourself a favour and see it. Unless you just want escapism.
