5 out of 5 stars More tear jerking than any of the other who episodes.   September 2, 2010
Joel Clark
Well i was not dissapointed by this.
It had everything you could want and its a whole ten episodes Which is very long for a doctor who story.
It has the past the future, Violence and emotion and just a tad bit of romance.
Of course noone likes romance in doctor who but ill let them of this once.
It brought me to tears when the doctor has to let his companions go and regenerate by force.
Its a very emotionaly gritty ending but i love it.
Buy because you'll regret it if you dont.

5 out of 5 stars HISTORIC DR WHO CLASSIC   August 11, 2010
Mrs. D. Wilson (UK)
This story was a ten part story way back in 1969 and was the last to feature Patrick troughton in the role and along with Jamie and Zoe. the story had twists and turns dueing each episode. it also worked well with black & white due to it set in world war 1. the classic story which was thrilling all the way through despite been so long. this story is one of my top 5 favorites.

THE WAR GAMES for me gets a well deserved 10/10 :)brilliant

5 out of 5 stars The War Games   July 29, 2010
Christopher Aldridge (Newark, DE)
I've loved this story ever since I first bought it on video back in 1990. Though it's his swansong it shows Patrick Troughton at the absolute height of his power as the Doctor and really makes us wish more of his stories existed in their entirety. The first episode introduces us to the horrors of the First World War and as it progresses slowly reveals hints that everything is not quite s it seems; futuristic technology in a General's quarters; a Redcoat from 1745 being thrown into a 1917 prison cell; Roman Soldiers charging across a moor; American Civil War soldiers being part of a resistance movement; the strange mist that separates them and finally Commanders with the ability to hypnotise the men under their command.
At 10 episodes it does seem a little long but it is well paced and builds beautifully over the 10 episodes until we finally get to the arrival of the Doctor's own people, the Time Lords, in their first appearance on the show and the realisation the the Doctor is actually a renegade, who "borrowed" the TARDIS because he was bored and wanted to explore.
A brilliant story, well written and acted. Definitely one of my all time favourite stories with one of my all time favourite Doctors! This is a must for anyone to have in their DVD collection.

4 out of 5 stars The War Games   July 7, 2010
James Richardson (UK)
story 7.5/10
extras 9/10

This story is ten episodes long but do not be put off as the story hardly ever sags.
The regular cast are all on top form and this is an excellent finale to the Troughton era.

The dvd restoration is a vast improvement on the VHS copy.

Revisionists try to claim that this is the best Troughton story (probably because it still exists) but this is wishful thinking. Still good though.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Who The War Games   June 10, 2010
Mrs. H. M. Marshall (England)
Despite the fact that this story was made in 1969 and on a very restricted budget I found it to be very well done. The storyline was quite gripping and well acted. The black and white film added to the atmosphere of the story. The end of the story where the Doctor has to ask his own people The Time Lords for help was an interesting twist. I enjoyed this DVD.
