Product Description Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, Derek JacobiDirector: Ridley Scott
Amazon.co.uk Review A big-budget summer epic with money to burn and a scale worthy of its golden Hollywood predecessors, Ridley Scott's Gladiator is a rousing, grisly, action-packed epic that takes moviemaking back to the Roman Empire via computer-generated visual effects. While not as fluid as the computer work done for, say, Titanic, it's an impressive achievement that will leave you marveling at the glory that was Rome, when you're not marveling at the glory that is Russell Crowe. Starring as the heroic general Maximus, Crowe firmly cements his star status both in terms of screen presence and acting chops, carrying the film on his decidedly non-computer-generated shoulders as he goes from brave general to wounded fugitive to stoic slave to gladiator hero. Gladiator's plot is a whirlwind of faux-Shakespearean machinations of death, betrayal, power plays, and secret identities (with lots of faux-Shakespearean dialogue ladled on to keep the proceedings appropriately "classical"), but it's all briskly shot, edited, and paced with a contemporary sensibility. Even the action scenes, somewhat muted but graphic in terms of implied violence and liberal bloodletting, are shot with a veracity that brings to mind--believe it or not--Saving Private Ryan, even if everyone is wearing a toga. As Crowe's nemesis, the evil emperor Commodus, Joaquin Phoenix chews scenery with authority, whether he's damning Maximus's popularity with the Roman mobs or lusting after his sister Lucilla (beautiful but distant Connie Nielsen); Oliver Reed, in his last role, hits the perfect notes of camp and gravitas as the slave owner who rescues Maximus from death and turns him into a coliseum star. Director Scott's visual flair is abundantly in evidence, with breathtaking shots and beautiful (albeit digital) landscapes, but it's Crowe's star power that will keep you in thrall--he's a true gladiator, worthy of his legendary status. Hail the conquering hero! --Mark Englehart

Awesome! March 5, 2010 S. Trott (Birmingham UK) I never got to see this one at the cinema and forgotten all about it until I came accros the title on the Amazon site.
Started to watch it 'for a few minutes' and ended up watching the whole movie straight through one Saturday morning.
if you haven't seen it, but it!
Classic! March 3, 2010 Mr. Rp Bignell (Northampton, UK) I have seen this many times and still love watching it. So much clearer too now it's on bluray. You can see every pore on mr crowe's face, detail is amazing.
Finally, this movie has been released ... March 1, 2010 Maximus (Switzerland) ... on the best possible system (at the moment): Blu-Ray! And does it not look absolutely stunning? And does it not sound fantastically crisp and clear? Yes, it does!! I was totally blown away, especially by the sound, as I heard things that I never heard before in this movie! Unbelievable ... the picture quality was already extraordinary on the DVD, but the sound ... boy oh boy ... my loudspeakers were working overtime! So, buy it, buy it, BUY IT!!
The Best Modern Epic to date. February 25, 2010 Benjamin Saunders Gladiator is a masterpiece and here's why, The film sees Russel crowe who acts the main caracter Maximus a Roman general who, after acts of betrayal is arrested and sentanced to death, he free's himself from capture and after many emotional events becomes enslaved and and bought as an illeagal Gladiator. I don't want to give away any more of the film because it has to be watched to be experienced.
Pro's:
It is a masterpiece of cinema
the camera work is breathtaking
the efects were ahead of thier time and still look fantastic 11years later
The DVD version is actually superior to the Blu-ray version
Con's:
None that i can think of
There should be a sequel..........Gladiator 2 return of Maximus............Ha Ha, only joking but it would be funny.
Remastered version rumoured to be released later this year February 22, 2010 S. M. Smiles (Hartlepool, UK) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've not seen the quality of this blu-ray myself first hand but going on the reviews I trust from various websites then this is a very poor transfer and certainly not worthy of this very very good movie or blu-ray. I have seen strong rumours coming from the digital bits website claiming industry qoutes saying the studio have already done another transfer which will be released later this year. I personally would wait to see if these are true before splahing cash on this poor poor transfer.
