Amazon.co.uk Review
If the devil is in the details, there's a lot of wicked fun in Angels & Demons, the sequel (originally a prequel) to The Da Vinci Code. Director Ron Howard delivers edge-of-your-pew thrills all over the Vatican, the City of Rome, and the deepest, dankest catacombs. Tom Hanks is dependably watchable in his reprised role as Professor Robert Langdon, summoned urgently to Rome on a matter of utmost urgency--which happens to coincide with the death of the Pope, meaning the Vatican is teeming with cardinals and Rome is teeming with the faithful. A religious offshoot group, calling themselves the Illuminati, which protested the Catholic Church's prosecution of scientists 400 years ago, has resurfaced and is making extreme, and gruesome, terrorist demands.

The film zooms around the city, as Langdon follows clues embedded in art, architecture, and the very bone structure of the Vatican. The cast is terrific, including Ewan McGregor, who is memorable as a young protégé of the late pontiff, and who seems to challenge the common wisdom of the Conclave just by being 40 years younger than his fellows when he lectures for church reform. Stellan Skarsgard is excellent as a gruff commander of the Swiss Guard, who may or may not have thrown in with the Illuminati. But the real star of the film is Rome, and its High Church gorgeousness, with lush cinematography by Salvatore Totino, who renders the real sky above the Vatican, in a cataclysmic event, with the detail and majesty of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. --A.T. 5 out of 5 stars DVD to book comparison   July 28, 2010
G. Dowse
A book that makes you concentrate and think about the story line and the subject matter. Not easy to guess the twist in the tale.

2 out of 5 stars Angels and Demons   June 22, 2010
Keane (U.K.)
I was disappointed by the Da Vinci Code film but hoped for better with Angels and Demons. I think it's probably on a par. If you liked the first film then you'll probably like this one too. Personally I found it rather heavy going and clumsy to start with. Tom Hanks seems to spend the first half of the film explaining the plot to the viewer by regularly informing his co-stars of the "facts" and history behind what's going on with the four missing cardinals and the Illulminati. Once that's out of the way there are some fairly exciting set pieces with a bit of tension, but overall this is a bit like and Indiana Jones film without the action. Hanks has a few good one liners but in amidst all the rest of the wooden dialogue these aren't enough to make me want to watch this again.

4 out of 5 stars A fairly entertaining thriller.   June 19, 2010

I have some, shall we say... issues... with religion, so at times it's difficult for me to watch these kind of films. But I don't see why I should let my personal opinions affect my ability to see a film that intrigues me. And so I sat down to watch Angels and Demons with slight trepadition.

I read the book a few years ago and, though the plot annoyed me at times, I can't deny that it was a well written page turner, as was The Da Vinci Code. But I am by no means a fan of Dan Brown.

As an adaption this is amongst the most faithful out there. There was the odd smattering of poetic license, the ending was altered a little but without affecting the actual outcome, and as with The Da Vinci Code all trace of the romantic plot line was removed - an odd thing for a Hollywood movie. And unfortunately all those irritating moments of religous self rightousness made it into the film.

But all comparisons to the book aside, this is a rather enjoyable thriller with an engaging plot, likeable characters, and a wonderfull soundtrack. The acting throughout is top notch, even if the odd accent faltered now and then, and the directorial style is both moving and inspiring, there was even a moment where, had I not already been aware of the outcome, I might have shed a tear.

So I would recommend this to Dan Brown fans as an accurate adaption that does justice to the book. And I would recommend it to all others as a good movie to curl up on the sofa with when you fancy something a little bit more dramatic than your typical Hollywood blockbuster.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing!   June 13, 2010
Grace Poole (Manchester, UK)
I was really looking forward to this film as I loved The Da Vinci Code. I felt the Da Vinci Code film was true to the book and really enjoyed it. So after reading Angels and Demons which is an amazing book, I couldn't wait for the film to come out. I saw Angels and Demons first at the Cinema and was very disappointed. It didn't capture the excitement or the atmosphere of the book at all. The pace seemed to be all wrong and some of the scenes were different from the book. I was particularly disappointed with the ending and the helicopter scene. I think it could have been done so much better.

Don't know what went wrong with this film? Great location, great Director, so what went wrong?

I believe there was trouble getting permission to film in a lot of locations so maybe that didn't help. Also the casting didn't seem right. Ewan Mcgregor was truly awful as the Camerlengo. I've seen him in other films and he is a great actor but didn't like him in this role at all. There was a lot of dodgy accents and think it would have been better to either cast more Italians or else not bother trying! Also a few dodgy scenes, like when the Italian Firemen lift Tom Hanks out of a deep hole and ask him in English if he is ok. How did they know he was English? Poor Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) seemed to be trying desperately to hold the film together but at times he had the look of a drowning man on his face - good job he is good swimmer!

I am glad I saw it at cinema first because I would have hated to buy it at full price when released. Much prefer the book.
