Amazon.co.uk Review Based on the best-selling book by Martina Cole, The Take follows the story of Freddie Jackson, a man who’s just left prison. And it’s fair to say has no intention of leaving a life of crime behind him. Thanks to the book of contacts he’s accrued while inside, he’s looking to put his newly found knowledge to commercial, and criminal, use. Played by Tom Hardy, in a strong leading turn, Jackson doesn’t take long to get back to business. The Take lands him a London rife with gang warfare though, and we soon get the impression that this is not a safe place to be. Events start in the mid 1980s, and the narrative of the drama then covers the next decade, and the cultural and political changes that encompasses. And Jackson’s life doesn’t quite go the way he’d envisaged⦠Co-starring Brian Cox and Charlotte Riley, The Take packs plenty in over its four instalments, and it doesn’t hold back on portraying just how brutal the London underworld can be. Yet it’s gripping drama, nonetheless, spearheaded by a superb turn from Tom Hardy in the lead role. Granted, it crams too much into four episodes, and often has to gallop through events. Plus, there’s a familiarity to the narrative. But this is a gritty, well-released adaptation of a strong book, and worth seeking out. --Jon Foster

Love it August 13, 2010 D. A. Clewes Watched this on Sky, but still wanted the DVD so I could watch it anytime. Absolutely love Tom Hardy, brilliant actor. Kept to the book quite well, considering there's only so much airing time, but brilliant. Very good choices of actors, although in the book, Jackie was overweight and in the DVD she had a perfect figure. Worth watching.
Good, but why no Blu-ray? July 21, 2010 BarnabyTheFilmViewer The series is good enough, but I find it puzzling why ITV have only released this on DVD, particularly as on the cover it says "As seen on Sky1 HD" (particular focus on the HD part). BSkyB have mentioned that they are interested in creating dramas that look good in high definition. If this is so, why do the let distributors like ITV release them on only standard definition prints? Come on ITV! Give us a Blu-ray version!
Martina Cole's The Take May 2, 2010 Eva Israelsson (sweden) one of the greatest movies I've ever seen!
if u like british movies u don't want to miss this one:)
Not for faint hearted !!!!!!! April 20, 2010 Joanne Coleman (UK) Brilliant. Bit confusing to start off with, but once I had 'sussed' who was who, etc..loved it. Watched it twice, and on both occasions was gripped. Set in the 80's ,so took me down memory lane also ( decor, music etc.. v. apt.)
LOVE IT, Great story line and acting! April 12, 2010 Amy S (England) Tom Hardy is amazing in The Take, the story line is great and made alot more interesting then the orginal by the great acting of all suporting cast also. Great value, diffinatly worth a watch (or 3)!!!
