Excellent Series - Enlightening and Entertaining August 2, 2010 S. Patel (London) Excellent TV series based on the advertising world in late 50s and early 60s. More than anything else it provides a glimpse of how corporate life was in that era.
Took me a while to get the hang of it but since then I have been hooked - Just finished watching Series 3.
Buy the boxset, sit back and re-live the old days!!!
Brilliant July 30, 2010 B. Murray (south london) The first series of Mad Men was slick, entertaining, beautiful to look at at and all in all class TV. I wondered, could it get better with series 2? The answer is a huge YES. This is even better because the slightly light weight/superficial painting of the characters in series 1 has been replaced by a much more in depth look at individuals' motives and how they connect with past ( and secret ) experiences. They all become more 3 dimensional and so as a viewer my initial series 1'judgement' of them has deepened to a more compassionate understanding of why they have all done what they have done. It is a much more emotional series which draws you in.
There are so many issues raised on the nature of relationships between men and women so food for thought as well as entertainment....how much did 1970s feminism change things?
It is GREAT television. I am trying to put off my addictive need to go straight onto series 3 for as long as possible!
A Cup Of Loneliness July 5, 2010 DTK Molise (Kabul, Afghanistan) Mad Men Season 2. After the hype "staggeringly stylish" and "the best thing on TV" that led me to Season 1, I took the plunge and joined Sterling Cooper in 1961. I was amazed and thrilled by the first season. The style was there sure but it also was backed up by real substance. Once I had finished I went straight out and purchased the second season and to be honest I was fairly disappointed.
Season 2 simply did not live up to the Season 1. The story-arc was not as strong, the characters noticably dropped into "soap style" storylines and some of the plots seemed forced and contrived. There is also the case of Don Draper that needs to be addressed. In the first season Draper was everything: dark, stylish, dangerous and brilliant. In the second season his character changed but not in a believeable way. He appears weak and his development and existential crisis becomes somewhat humdrum. I was slightly disappointed when his secret came out in Season 1 and it goes to show I was correct because in Season 2 there is nowhere for the story to go.
Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of this season was the way the viewer was expected to suspend belief on far too many occasions. The best dramas (The Wire, The Soporanos) simply do not do that. I also think that the tackling of "issues" was poorly handled and seemed forced into the story. On the plus side, as noted by someone else here, they did not ram the bigotry and sexism down the throat as much as in Season 1.
The way that religion (or Catholicism specifically) is brought into the plot appears very superficial in comparison to way this was explored in The Sopranos. It might be harsh to compare these two shows but due to Weiner's involvement with The Sopranos and the similarity of the two storylines (both Man Men and The Sopranos have a long-running storyline of a priest getting involved with a family) I do not think it is possible to ignore it.
So overall I found this a disappointing season. Yes it is still clever, elegantly shot, often funny with a great cast and blessed with a brilliant score but it is also deeply flawed. I am looking forward to Season 3 because I think that they can do so much better. However with the disappointingly quick development of Don Draper taking place in Season 2 I am questioning if Man Men has much life left in the tank.
Mad Men - S2 May 17, 2010 Mr. M. Bland (London UK) If you liked Season 1 you will love this - more of the same but deeper characterisation!
Essential purchase and the blu ray transfer is great - sharp with just a touch of grain to make it feel very authentic...
Mad Men series 2 April 30, 2010 bp It is what is what is left to the viewer to ponder in the many sliences of the characters which makes this riveting TV. TV for grownups!Mad Men - Complete Season 2 [Blu-ray] [2008]
