'NEWCLEAR PICTURE QUALITY' May 17, 2010 George Henderson (SLIGO ROI) As A Bond fan Connery films in particular this wouldn't be my favourite. It's a little over long and laboured at times.
When you consider the backstory behind Thunderball court case extra producer and the passing of Ian Fleming the previous year
it's amazing it ever made the screen. However back to the movie when you remember all the bad cinema cuts of thunderball
from the 70's when presented as double bill etc this disc is a treasure crystal picture great sound vibrant colours.
Not the best Bond definitely not the worst either well presented here with extras imported from the ultimate edition.
It has been suggested that the ultimate editions upscaled on a blu-ray player are equal in quality to the bond blu-rays.
Personally I don't think so check out this disc or goldfinger you won't be disappointed
Really please with this Blu ray May 10, 2010 GregK (Amsterdam, Holland) What a difference it makes to see this title refreshed and on Blu ray, the difference between the original and the new transfer is remarkable. It really is a joy to watch.
Another 'must' for hardened Bond fans December 13, 2009 MacAvity (UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
A fine restoration you will not regret buying. I particularly enjoyed the extra feature from Ford entitled 'A Child's Guide To Blowing Up a Motor Car' written & narrated by Denis Norden and starring him and a small boy who would have been about my age when the movie was made. Look out for all the memorable sixties Fords here, each one full of personality - in contrast to all the bland motors around today.
The only crticism I have of this disc is that, like many blu-ray titles, the sound is too loud at the loud bits (music, FX) yet too quiet during the dialogue. I kept having to alter the TV volume. To the best of my knowledge I have no hearing problems. So maybe this is just a personal thing.
However, perhaps blu-ray audio 'in general' is recorded chiefly for people who have sophisticated home cinema systems with several loudpspeakers. If you don't have such a setup maybe the audio will always sound a bit weird in basic stereo. Anyone...?
Leastwise it's a very small point.
I don't want to put you off buying because this blu-ray version is the best version of Thunderball I have ever seen. You are sure to love it. In my view it's excellent value.
Thunderball with a dot! (Blu-ray) October 11, 2009 Radders (Greencroft, Co. Durham, U.K.) I am greatly impressed with efforts to restore the film, but can any one tell me why a annoying white dot appears near the top right hand of film in certain scenes? I haven't seen it on previous dvd releases once noticed it distacts you from enjoying not quite a perfect transfare but pretty near considering it's age.
Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang June 18, 2009 D. Campbell (Perthshire) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I agree with most people that this isn't the best of the 'classic' Bond movies and has plot holes big enough to fly a Vulcan bomber through. As others have said, the restoration of this movie to Blu-ray hasn't quite matched the standards of 'Goldfinger', perhaps. But brightly lit outdoor shots and some of the interiors look fantastic and Luciana Paluzzi (Fiona) looks fantastic in every scene she is in. By comparison, the underwater and night-time shots look a bit murky. Sound quality is fine but not exceptional. I didn't own the most recent 'Special Edition DVD' and thought the full range of extras presented here was outstanding. They include the full version of Ford Film Unit's 'Child's Guide to Blowing Up a Motor car'. This short feature is written by and stars veteran UK scriptwriter Denis Norden and is a delightfully witty and wicked affair which pokes fun at the whole Bond circus. Some of the older extras have obviously been upgraded to HD and look great and these capture the craziness of the Bond phenomenon at it's peak. It's also worth listening to the commentary track to hear the originally intended title song, "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", sung by Dionne Warwick over the titles - far better than the familiar title song.
So despite some reservations about the film itself, the excellent extras make this an essential buy for fans of Sean's Bond.
