The best Bond film in HD. June 8, 2010 Gabriel De Bourg (Stockholm, Sweden) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
From Russia With Love is my favorite of all the Bond films. While I could delve into explaining that I will mostly focus on this Blu-Ray edition.
I own most of the Bond, single disc DVD edition. As such I made a side-by-side comparison between them. The difference is huge. To start with the picture is clearer, with a crisp definition and lively colour. Overall it feels more alive and natural. The sound is also improved, especially the music has a larger dynamic range.
The extras are the same, but as I mentioned in my review of Dr. No I don't wish anything more. They are of such high standard that it doesn't matter to me. This is also the only one where Connery makes and appearance in there.
Overall it is a great step-up from the DVD when it comes to audio/visuals and as such I highly recommend to every Bond-fan!
Bonds Finest Hour? June 7, 2010 Tom Cat © (Earth) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
In what is arguably the finest outing of the pre-70's Bond era, From Russia With Love makes a welcome entrance to the land of Blu-Ray amongst a batch of other titles from MGM. The film is rightly picked for this first set of releases - it just about sums up everything that is great about James Bond and even manages to correct the very few faults of Dr. No (apart from re-using the areas of the soundtrack!) The lead 'Bond Girl' Daniela Bianchi is a quite exquisite individual, but its also nice to see a younger Robert Shaw (from Jaws) playing the double-crossing Agent who inevitably helps Bond in his mission, but compromises it soon after. The acting all round is superb, and the tones of the film are the most realistic in the entire series. Whats more, the gadgetry is limited - although this was Q's first appearance, even Bond is modest in the need of his knew toys.
Before I bought this Blu-Ray, I did a bit of research to see how the Lowry restoration compared to the other efforts, and was quizzed to read that some individuals didn't think it was impressive as Dr. No. I would however have to disagree. There are no faults in the restoration, but I can see that the picture is not always as sharp/crisp as that of Dr. No purely because there are more out-of-focus shots in this film. This is very easy to spot and demonstrated on several occasions; whereas the final hotel scene with Kleb and Bonds fight is perfectly in focus, some earlier scenes don't jump as much. To the average viewer, this is probably nit-picking, but I just thought I'd point this out to correct those disrespecting the amazing work that goes into restoring these films. The extras are, again, in abundance too.
In short, this is an essential purchase not just for Bond fans, but for any movie lover. If North By North West was, as Hitchcock suggested, "the very first Bond film", then this is arguably the sequel by any measure.
"She's had her kicks" April 30, 2010 bernie (Arlington, Texas) Col. Klebb (Lotte Lenya) Tells Tatiana Romanov that the KGB wants her to defect and take the LEKTOR (a typewriter sized cipher device with her). M (Bernard Lee) tells James bond that he is to help Tatiana and get the Lector. Every thing sounds pretty simple. But who is Klebb really working for?
This movie relied more on acting than gadgets. In later movies gadgets almost outshine even 007. Here the only real gadget is the brief case with the standard 00 issue.
As if you have not heard it a million times this is the definitive 007 movie. When some one mentions 007 this is the one that come in mind. It has well known good guys, bad guys and good-bad guys (Lotte Lenya). See her in the movie that made her famous "The Threepenny Opera".
Who can forget the posters of Daniela Bianchi with the velvet band around her throat? She even looks good through a periscope.
Of course with out Sean Connery as 007 became a classic. All the later Actors that played the bond Character are compared to him. This is almost a series of several mini movies as we move focus from one character to another.
I have watched this film on and off over the years and picture quality and sound have not lost any luster. Even though it was made before Blu-ray, it looks as though Blu-ray and big screen TV does this film justice.
Dr. No (James Bond) [Blu-ray]
From Russia with Love: James Bond Series #5
Great blu ray update April 28, 2010 PJ Rankine (Wallington, Surrey United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Is it worth buying a forty seven year old film on blu ray? Hell yes, this film is so sharp you'd think it had just been made. I haven't seen many of the old Bonds but inspired by my enjoyment of the latest two I decided to give this a go and I wasn't disappointed. I don't think I can remember Sean Connery looking so young and the storyline and lack of stupid gadgets certainly seemed nearer to the Fleming books as I remember then. This film is worth watching if only for the scenes of Instanbul in the sixties which on blu ray looked like you were watching through a window. A great reminder of just how good some old films can be.
As if it were made yesterday. January 11, 2010 Mr. Jh Kember (Dorset, England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After reading the reviews on the release of the bond box sets on Blu-Ray it was recommended that i should buy them individually as the box sets were not in chronological order and were in cheap this cases. I am glad i took that advice as the presentation of these cases is of a very high standard. As for the films, well i was blown away. Naturally i purchased Dr.No along with this bond and several others, I could not believe how clear the picture was. I know that Blu-Ray is good anyway, but as this film was made in 1963 the crispness of the picture was amazing you could see Bond like never before as the repeats on TV are really starting to look dated. throughout the whole film I was just amazed, from the closeups of the actors to the wide scenery shots it was like the films were made yesterday. The special features are also excellent, it shows you in detail how they have taken great care to reproduce these films. They really bring the films back to life and simply remind you of why you fell in love with Bond in the first place.
