A.O.K. June 12, 2010 William Jones (UK) Great dvd for grandad, that's me,also the grankids were engrossed in it as well.Highly reccomend it.
Wow! May 16, 2010 hw (uk) "Wow!", says presenter Iain Stewart, during the opening sequences and several times in each of the five episodes of "Earth". "Wow!", indeed.
"Earth" is an ambitious attempt to explain how various aspects of the planet's infrastructure (volcanoes, the atmosphere, ice, oceans) interacted and continue to interact to create an environment that is hospitable to life. The final film looks back to the formation of the Earth and considers the possibilities for life on other planets.
The films are visually stunning (as you would expect from the BBC) with dramatic live footage supported by informative graphics. The science is explained in a clear, unfussy way; often by specialists and supported by compelling visuals - at one point scientists set a match to a frozen Siberian lake with dramatic results.
The only downside is the presenter. Whilst I've got no fundamental objection to the "front of camera" approach, Iain Stewart has an unhappy knack of morphing from enthusiastic scientist to Action Man. Iain inside a glacier is fine, but do we really need to see Iain in one of the fastest planes in the world, Iain cave-diving ("this is really dangerous") or Iain paddling in the sea?
Even so, unless you're a David Attenborough purist, you should enjoy this lively and informative overview of the science of the planetary environment.
Good product March 9, 2010 E. M. Martin (London, UK) I like this item a lot!
The only problem i see is that there are no more languages available than english....
the presenter is very good, and the topics it covers are quite nice. It explains with real and computer examples some proccess of the earth.
great visuals, shame about the audio January 6, 2010 Jodro (UK) 4 out of 14 found this review helpful
The visuals on these DVDs are as one would expect them to be: staggering, beautiful, dramatic, astonishing, gorgeous, informative and so on. The contents of the commentary are also excellent... however, not only does Dr Lain Stewart talk with the incessant over-the-top enthusiasm that's normally the preserve of children's programs, even worse is that the soundtrack is packed to the hilt with annoying kitsch-muzak, supposedly to add drama to the already dramatic visuals and the already over the top dramatic voice-overs. Whoever did the soundtrack jampacked it so utterly that there's hardly a moment of peace or rest... every tiny hole has been filled. I've tried EQ-ing the music out, used the speech setting on my screen and DVD player, all to no avail. What could have been a great DVD is in fact utterly unwatchable because one is drowned in an ocean of aural kitsch. Ugghhh....
Earth - The Power of the Planet December 31, 2009 Maddy Ball (London) This is a very well produced DVD. The narrative is non-intrusive and the images are amazing. It gives much information to allow you to appreciate our amazing world. Well recommended
