| Customer Reviews: Well received August 21, 2009 K. Cavill (Essex, UK) I bought these for my mum for her birthday and she was thrilled with them. They were very reasonably priced on amazon.
Watching them really brings back memories for those of us old enough to remember when they were originally shown in the '70s and '80s. They are a great watch for anyone who loves animals and stories with rural settings. These stories are so typically English, which is something else that makes them appealing.
My only gripes are that they don't sell all seasons in one complete boxset and that as is often the case with BBC dvds, no special features (interviews or anything like that) have been included. A missed opportunity.
All Creatures Great And Small DVD June 22, 2009 P. J. Curtis (Tamworth England) This series of progammes are timeless with excellent stories, superb cast and beautiful scenery. This is the old BBC at it's best and considering these were made so many years ago, they are watchable both for keen fans and new viewers. The reproduction in ditital format brings the series to life. An excellent Christmas present for people of all ages'
Better than series 4 February 23, 2009 Primzahl (Ruhrstadt) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After series 4, which is the weakest of all series, this series definitely is an
improvement. With Helen bedridden there is chaos in Skeldale House.
Calum gets a visit from lovely Molly from Dublin and suddenly is in love with
two women. Herriots will move out of Skeldale House and in the last episode we
witness the first TV broadcasts in Yorkshire.
The only disappointment is the DVD navigation, which is not as good as the
one from series 4.
Series 5 - Still a classic! March 14, 2008 G. Basford (Nairn, Scotland) 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
After Series 3 and 2 christmas specials, Carol Drinkwater left the show. Lynda Bellingham replaced her in Series 4 and here we find her getting more into the role of Helen. Unfortunately Helen is in bed with a slipped disc at the start of the series, but we see her more halfway through. Some people thought that Lynda wasn't as good as Carol in the role, but here I strongly disagree. She IS different admittedly, but portrays the charcter in a different way, thats all.
In this series Calum is settling into life in Darrowby and Tristan goes to ireland for some Tuberculin testing. James and Helen move into their lovely cottage, Rowangarth and Siegried tries to make the tight fisted farmers pay their bills, which is a job in itself. James and Siegfried also has to deal with a man who has cancer.
If you require some escapism from the modern world, then sit back and enjoy these 12 episodes of good old fashioned drama with a sense of humour all rolled into one!
Still Entertaining October 6, 2005 Mark Antony (United Kingdom) 27 out of 29 found this review helpful
This fifth series marked the half way point in All Creatures adventures, after being resurected after WW2. This series does not date from 1978 as stated, but 1986/87. This classic BBC production is no longer based on the books of James Herriot, new writers based stories on the wonderful character performances of Robert Hardy (Senior partner Seigfried) Peter Davison (Brother Tristan) Christopher Timothy. (James Herriot) In addition to which, there is now colourful Scottish vet Callum Buccannon, intoduced during series 4, to assist the partners in practice, and his love affair with Diedre, former girlfriend of Tristan, is chartered in the episodes. One continuing handicap of the later series was Carol Drinkwater no longer played Helen Herriot, the role was thereafter the war assumed by Lynda Bellingham, who tended to play every part she got exactly the same. Thus she was never really Helen, simply Lynda Bellingham joining the family. Continuity errors dogged the programme, with things like the all too fast aging of the Herriots children, never again seeing Siegfrieds family. However, if you can overlook those shortfalls, there are still some wonderful moments to enjoy, with cantankerous farmer Biggins making James life difficult, Seigfrieds frustrations of slow paying clients, the escapades of Callum and Tristan, and gregarious local vet Granville Bennet, all helping to create nostalgic moments to treasure. The weakest series of All Creaures, but the many fans will still need to complete their collection.
