Product Description Classic Hitchcock movie starring Grace Kelly & Ray Milland. Ex-tennis pro Tony Wendice decides to murder his wife for her money and because she had an affair the year before. He blackmails an old college associate to strangle her, but when things go wrong he sees a way to turn events to his advantage.
Amazon.co.uk Review A suave tennis player (Ray Milland) plots the perfect murder, the dispatching of his wealthy wife (Grace Kelly), who is having an affair with a writer (Robert Cummings). Amazingly, the wife manages to stave off her attacker, a twist of fate that challenges the hubby's talent for improvisation. Alfred Hitchcock wisely stuck to the stage origins of Dial M for Murder, ignoring the temptation to "open up" the material from the home of the unhappy couple. The result may not be one of Hitchcock's deepest films but it's a thoroughly engaging chamber movie. It also features Grace Kelly at her loveliest, the same year she made Rear Window with Hitchcock. Dial M for Murder was filmed in the briefly trendy 3-D process and Hitchcock shot some scenes to bring out the depth of the 3-D field; it's especially good for the nail-biting attempted murder of Kelly and her desperate reach for a pair of scissors that seems to be just outside her grasp. However, the film was rarely shown with the proper 3-D projection, going out "flat" instead (a 1980 reissue restored the process for a limited theatrical release). Dial M was remade in 1998 as A Perfect Murder,a film that changed and expanded the material, with no improvement on the clean, witty original. --Robert Horton

How clever can you get? April 12, 2010 Mr. Anthony Cox Ray Milland (Welsh actor),the husband of Grace Kelly in the film..she is having an affair..so Ray bribes his very old chum, into doing a deed that is 'MURDER'..so fine is this oppotune time, with the keys stolen..and perfect!...until she forces off the killer and kills HIM with the desk scissors!..Now Ray had all this planned to the very last detail, then a D.S.was on the the case..now i won't spoil the film for you..but 'How does Ray a.k.a.Tony blag his way out of this one..nearly perfect..Watch the film..Milland should have won an acadamy award*. Total suspence and real great acting by all the cast!!

Hitchcock's best February 16, 2010 Mr. M. A. Speedy (UK) I love this film.
It is like a play - not much scenery, it is virtually all based in one room.
Clever plot, nice acting, the detective is the coolest posh character of all time, and very funny too.
But perhaps my judgement is slightly distorted because of Grace Kelly. What a woman! ;)
Dial M for Master at work!! January 9, 2010 ivor winters (England) One of my favorite Hitchcock films, shot, apart from a few scenes, entirely in the room where the murder takes place. It is a beautifully crafted little gem of a movie that has us changing alliegences as quickly as as the detective swaps the raincoats.First we are on the side of the two lovers not wanting their tryst to be discovered then we switch to the husband then to Lesgate and finally via the detective back to the wife.On the way we are treated to some intricate plotting to do with the key but dont let this dissuade you.Dial M is well worth the effort for so many reasons but chief amongst these must be the scenes between Ray Milland (Wendiss) and Anthony Dawson (Lesgate). If there has ever been a finer exchange of dialouge, so wonderfully acted then I am unaware of it,and all this aided by Hitchcocks seamless directing.Buy this DVD and have the pleasure one afternoon or evening of settling down and discovering how it was done when they knew how to do it!
Smart tale of murder December 6, 2009 Stampy (England) Tony Wendice (Milland) hires Captain Lesgate Swann (Anthony Dawson) to kill his wife (Kelly) after he found out about her cheating and can therefore inherit her fortune.
The master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock conjures up a one roomed murder crime that showcases an array of heavy scripting and multiple dialogue that all comes together in a neat little package, if being quite a heavy burden to be.
Dial M for murder, based on Frederick Knott's play (who also scripted the screenplay), brings a fantastic array of planning brutal murder and the drastic twists and turns that shake up afterwards. The plot initially is slow moving as we learn of Margot's cheating and Tony's knowledge of her marital betrayal. After a cleverly masked performance in front of his betrayer he phones Captain Swann about a car for sale and from here the script edges up to reveal the true intentions of Mr Wendice.
Ray Milland speaks quickly and acts cleverly to get his way around trouble and looks conspicuously guilty but portrays a deft smear of innocence, and a wonderful performance it is. Grace Kelly is the shining beauty with a troubled agenda on her shoulders as Margot whilst Robert Cummings supplies a rather bland persona as Margot's lover and these performances are irrelevant in the grand scheme of this crime.
The real intentions of Wendice unravel in an unashamed mask of honesty as he reveals every rule, every fabrication of his scheme to murder his wife and leave guilt free with her money. The use of blackmail against Swann is at length grammatically sound as they explore the foundations and consequences and benefits of following through with their intentions. As with strangers on a train the resounding use of a delicate issue in murder is given a full working over and yet unlike that film, this isn't short and snappy but overly long and tiresome.
For all of Hitchcock's credentials as master of suspense and his adept style at giving the plot tension and excitement this 1954 release is void of any real vintage film making. For one the film is constantly talking and working out its own problems and misgivings and whilst there is absolute no denying the intelligence and brilliance behind one sole event, it grows weary with time and the eventual rapping up comes down to a debatable conclusion.
This would be the most perfect picture ever created if there was a bit more action and adrenaline to go with the feel of the script. For example the actual murder is brilliantly twisted and shot and after that the film denies any responsible action, and it all bubbles down to talking about solutions and escapism.
This is a good picture with a brilliant cast and a wonderful depiction of murder and betrayal but just doesn't generate a feeling of excitement and suspense other reviews have credited it with.
7/10
