Amazon.co.uk Review Created by JJ Abrams, Alias plays like a cross between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and James Bond. Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) is a super (and super-sexy) spy, fighting nefarious villains and working for the good guys--or so she thinks. Recruited as a college freshman for espionage work, Sydney found her true calling with SD-6, a secret division of the CIA. When her hunky doctor-boyfriend proposes to her, she decides to let him in on the truth she's not supposed to tell anyone: she's not a grad student with a demanding job for an international bank, but a secret agent who constantly puts her life on the line for the free world. But when SD-6 discovers her security breach, her fiancé is brutally assassinated, and Sydney suddenly finds herself face-to-face with the truth: she's been working for the bad guys. Deciding to become a double agent for the CIA and bring down the evildoers, Sydney gets one more surprise--her estranged father (Victor Garber) is also working for SD-6, and the CIA as well. Welcome to the family, Syd! Confused? This is all just the first episode. With its double-edged tension (how long can Syd play double agent?) and one heck of a MacGuffin (the dreaded Rambaldi device, the mythic creation of a Renaissance genius), the show leads its viewers from episode to episode with visceral, compelling action, not to mention the nascent romance between Syd and her CIA handler, Vaughn (Michael Vartan), and her clashes with her heretofore distant father. Sharp, smart and always suspenseful, Alias' centre was held by the gorgeous Garner, a stellar action heroine and an even better actress who could pull off Sydney's exotic undercover missions and conflicted emotions with equal dexterity. By the end of this first series, which concludes with a breathtaking cliffhanger, you'll be seduced into Alias' world with, happily, no desire to escape. --Mark Englehart

Fast paced and entertaining July 18, 2010 Dodster (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The story of the good girl, working for the bad guys (SD 6), who finds out she's on the wrong side. Signs up to work for the good guys (CIA), while still working for the bad guys!
The rest of the story is how she sets about achieving this.
Wonderful, far fetched at times, fast paced action series. Good value too, you get a lot (20+)episodes in the box set.
kicks butt November 3, 2009 Lindymck (Falkirk, Scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
loved this show!!! sydney is a spy for the CIA (or so she thinks) and when her boyf asks her to marry him she has to come clean. but this doesnt go down well and her boss, Arvin Sloane, has him killed. this leads to her discovering the truth that she doesnt really work for CIA so she decides on revenge and becomes a double agent for the CIA. also she discovers that her dad isnt quite what he seems and they form a new connection. over the course of the series sydney battles with the many personal issues in her life like faling for her CIA handler, Vaughn (played by the delicious Micheal Vartan). super stunts, great plot lines, fantastic alias' and some famous faces.
Good fun, bad science October 4, 2009 RetryCancelAbort (East Anglia, UK) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The entire series is pure brain-candy; the plots have more holes than a string vest, the timelines would perplex Doctor Who, and the 'science' is simply absurd. Despite all that, it manages to be entertaining in the same vein as the old Mission Impossible TV series, consistently twisting and turning happily though 5 series. Good fun if you can resist thinking about it too much.
If you want serious, well-written drama with depth, get The Wire instead.
I think blonde today August 28, 2009 Fiona Macdonald (scotland) I never watched this when it was on the telly, and really did not know anything about it. I was blown away, I thought this programme was excellent, I can't believe I had never seen it before--- anyway I bought all the rest of the 5 seasons, I do think the first 2 are the best, but all are enjoyable.
Alias - Complete Season 1 June 7, 2009 Mrs. Patricia Blain (Gloucestershire) I think this is one of the best series out there and would recommend it to anyone
