Amazon.co.uk Review Although now regarded as the opening salvo of a classic series, the original Blackadder series was not considered a great success, either among critics or many viewers, so a major rethink took place when it was recommissioned. On the writing front, future-Four Weddings And A Funeral scribe Richard Curtis was joined by Ben Elton, while the expensive War of the Roses-era sets were replaced by cosier Elizabethan ones. The most important change, however, was with Rowan Atkinson's eponymous character who, in the first series, had been a fairly weak-willed idiot but now emerged as the familiar Machiavellian fiend which would cement Atkinson's place in the pantheon of great British sitcom actors. Moreover, even if so many of the script's lines have been subsequently ripped off by lesser hands that it can't help but occasionally sound dated, the central performances of Atkinson, Tony Robinson (Baldrick), Tim McInnery (Lord Percy), Stephen Fry (Lord Melchett) and, of course, Miranda Richardson as the childishly psychotic Queen Elizabeth ("I love it when you get cross. Sometimes I think about having you executed just to see the expression on your face") remain note perfect. Yet the real pleasure for viewers may be in rediscovering the raft of excellent guest star performances--not least Tom "Doctor Who" Baker's berserk turn as a literally legless old sea dog given to guzzling his own urine long before the drinking water has run out. --Clark Collis

5 stars for the show but 1 star for the DVD May 9, 2010 J. SIMMONS 10 out of 10 for the show - There is not a lot that is funnier than the second series of Blackadder.
The costumes are perfect, as are the performances.
The picture though, is no better than VHS.
The BBC can put in a great deal of effort re-mastering their classics as anybody who has bought a 'classic series' Doctor Who will testify. It really would be appreciated if they did this with Blackadder as the quality is shocking and in some parts barely watchable. If you have the VHS of this, check if its still there - it may have been used to master this DVD ;-)
'Percy! It's GREEN! April 28, 2010 Mr. Anthony Cox 'I don't want to be pandantic or anything, but the colour of Gold is "Gold",thats why it's called Gold..what you have discovered,if it has a name,is some GREEN!'..'Edmund,can it be TRUE!! that i hold in my mortal hands,a nugget of pureist GREEN!'..'Yes but more of a splatt really!'..'So we Three in all the land can create the finest GREEN at will?'..'Yes my Lord..not sure about counting Baldrick in though'..' So you know what this discovery means don't you!..That you Percy, Lord Percy! is an utter BERK!'
A dialogue from the third episode of the the very best of this series 'Blackadder 2'..a great buy!
The history of comedy April 22, 2010 Ben Nicholson (Landrake, Saltash, Cornwall, UK) Use this as the 1st Series of Blackadder. It's brilliant, funny and probably the best comedy ever and the stars bounch of each other and play there rolls brilliant. This is one of the best comedys of all time, in my opion the best comedy, but If you get this I promise you, you will laugh. Please trust me.
This is the series where Blackadder came into his own as a character February 13, 2010 Andreas Faust (Tasmanian Autonomous Zone) In this second series Edmund Blackadder really came into his own as a character. Instead of the rather snivelling Edmund of the first series, we are presented with the amoral, selfish and cynical (but brilliantly witty) Blackadder we all know and love. Baldrick, who was almost intelligent in the first series, now reveals himself as a turnip-obsessed dimwit who would become even stupider as time went on.
The most memorable thing about 'Blackadder 2', however, is Miranda Richardson, who is unforgettable as the psychotic Queen ("Oh Edmund, I love it when you get angry...sometimes I think about having you executed, just to see the look on your face..."). Patsy Byrne is great as the Queen's old nurse ("A sad old woman with an udder fixation," as Edmund calls her), and Stephen Fry is on top form as Lord Melchitt, a man as Machiavellian and calculating as Blackadder, but with less self esteem.
There are some great cameos, too, notably from Tom 'Dr. Who' Baker as a demented sea captain, and Rik Mayall as the womanising Lord Flashheart (he would reprise this role to even greater effect in the fourth series).
Probably the funniest episode is 'Beer', when Blackadder's fanatical puritan relatives the Whiteadders come round for tea, but Blackadder forgets he had also arranged a debauched drinking session for the same night. He then has to keep the two events running concurrently without the Whiteadders suspecting what is going on, which leads to hilarity as he tries to come up with explanations for the drunken roars emerging from the next room.
Another great episode is 'Head', where Blackadder is made Lord High Executioner, but then changes the execution schedule to give himself half a week off. This leads to the premature execution of a nobleman, whose wife then gains permission from the Queen to visit him. Blackadder and his companions must try and impersonate the dead man, somehow keeping up the pretence that he is alive.
Other good episodes include 'Chains', where Blackadder and Melchitt are taken hostage by a crazed German, and 'Money' where Blackadder is pursued by the baby-eating Bishop of Bath and Wells to collect a debt he owes to the Black Monks.
blackadder 2 January 8, 2010 road nomad (ebbw vale wales) a brilliant comedy with rowan atkinson as the devious edmund blackadder and tony robinson as his sidekick balderick.this comedy is up there with only fools and horses.
